Welcome to the first State of the Legend! In this post, I will discuss the current state of the project and my visions for the future. After a while, I will post the second one: reviewing what we achieved and communicating what will be next.


What is The Legend of Peach?

The Legend of Peach is a Game made for the GMTK-GameJam 2023 under the theme „Roles Reversed“. It is a platformer in which Peach breaks out of her cage and begins her quest defeating bowser. Her signature move is the glide, with which you can cross large gaps or execute fun saving maneuvers.


What do we have right now?

The game is programmed in Scratch. While this isn’t as limiting as you might think, it makes somethings hard/awkward. Therefore, I programmed the game so it has multiple „rooms“ and touching the edge of the screen loads the nexts of these rooms. While also not being perfect, this still allows for a two dimensional system of rooms with, ignoring the fact that the whole screen changes and you are teleported from one side to the other, seamless transitions between rooms. Thanks to Blazinator333 we also have nice pixelarts and background images. Moreover, I made a bit of music for the game. The game is able to store data between sessions and keeps track of your best time and the best world wide (though their seem to be some bugs with this).

Considering this, I would say this is quite a solid start, especially because it was all done in 48 hours.


The first Update

Earlier this day, I uploaded the first update, though a hotfix will be released tomorrow or prior. This hotfix will take care of a few crucial oversights on my part, but won’t have any impact on the main game only the timers, which I forgot to reset before packaging the build.

Todays update brought some sound effects made by ClairedeLou and a new skip, which should allow for sub 40s times. I also did some minor polishing on one of the levels, in which you, prior to the update, tended to become stuck in a corner.


Next Steps

In the following section, I will discuss my plans for the future of this game. Keep in mind that the following is neither guaranteed nor promised. It are my plans, but the plans might change. Plans are always subject to change. The environment develops: What today seams feasible might be impossible in the future. But you have my word that I will try. The most important step a person can take is always the next one. So let’s discuss it.

I plan on adding four more stages and three new abilities to the game. Also, I want one more variety of the bowser fight and harder versions of the existing one and the one coming. The new stages will get different backgrounds and new music. The new abilities will also get there own animations and sound effects. Speaking of which, there are a few, I haven’t implemented yet. I am not sure, whether I will, but I will try them. Some might have noticed, that the safe feature is quite … broken. It will be replaced with a system that only allows for saving, after a stage completion (the fights), though I might add checkpoints, if play testing deems them necessary.

With the next hotfix, the numbering system will change from counting how many zip-files are clocking up my download folder to a more … practical system. Each file will have three numbers seperated by dots. The first number will be counting the major updates (one being the jam version), the second the minor (the update today was update 1.1) and the third small fixes, so the hotfix will be version „1.1.1“.
